Motivational interviewing (MI) is a patient-centered counseling approach used during a clinical visit. It can be briefly integrated into patient encounters and is designed to promote clarity and open communication while enhancing motivation to change behavior and clarify decisions among patients who are confused and not ready to change. The relationship in motivational interviewing is one of autonomy, not authority. Rather than being an authority figure as with other psychologies, counsellors here understand that, because the true power for change rests within the client, it is up to the client to follow through with making change happen. 2010-04-27 · Motivational interviewing uses a guiding style to engage with patients, clarify their strengths and aspirations, evoke their own motivations for change, and promote autonomy of decision making The spirit of motivational interviewing is concerned with this relational aspect.
